North East India Tourism & Travel Information

It is one of the Nagaland towns with Municipal council status along with Dimapur and Mokokchung. The name “Kew Hi" is the name of a plant that grows on the mountainside. "Kew Hi Ma" means "the men of the land where the flower Kew Hi grows". The best time to travel is through out the year, though best is between November to March. Kohima is a hill station perched at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level. The weather condition is summers typical like tropical and winters are dry and bitterly cold. Kohima experiences around 250 centimeter of annual rainfall. Located at a height of 1495 meters is Kohima, the state capital. A pretty town it is endearingly unspoiled, tranquil and immersed in history. The World War II memorial, listing the brave Nagas who laid down their lives, is the biggest attraction here. It has a large cemetery for the Allied war dead. It lies on the slopes of Garrison Hill; it was once the Deputy Commissioner's tennis court which was the scene of intense fighting. The epitaph on the memorial of the British Division in the cemetery has the inscription written on it. It has become international as the Kohima poem.

“When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us and Say,
For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today”
