North East India Tourism & Travel Information

Bankura district is one of the seven districts of Burdwan Division in the Indian state of West Bengal.  It is a beautiful district, situated on the banks of Dwarakeshwar and covers an area of over 6881 square kilometers. The district has been described as the connecting link between the plains of Bengal on the east and Chota Nagpur plateau on the west. It is the centre of the famous Malla kingdom of western Bengal. It is known for its historical and cultural significance. Vaishnavism gained the status of state religion during the Malla kingdom and was annexed by British East India Company in 1765 and the modern Bankura district took its form in 1881 and was named after its headquarters. Temples, Hills, culture and forest are the main attractions of this region. There are a number of dams or water reservoirs, namely, Lalbundh, Krishnabundh, Shyambundh etc. A number of cannons are there, exposed to weather for centuries and yet free from rust. Vishnupur developed a distinct style of music, i.e. Vishnupur Gharana of which perhaps the most famous exponent was Jadu Bhatta.
